‘I feel like my life is starting to turn a corner, I feel so useful with the volunteering I am doing, its keeping me busy and my confidence is soaring. I have decided to start looking for jobs in the care industry, I have never worked in this area before but now I really think I could do it.’
If you have some free time and a willingness to support a local charity, then you could become an appreciated volunteer with Thurrock Mind.
Our volunteers say that they have gained valuable work experience, improved their social networks and made a contribution to the area they live in. They have enhanced their own self value by supporting others who are in need.
As a volunteer at Thurrock Mind you don’t need any experience – we provide training for whichever role you choose and we don’t ask for any set number of hours – you decide the time you are able to give.
Take a look at the variety of roles below that we have within our projects and please get in touch on 01375 391411 or email email@example.com to get involved.
Stepping Stones Volunteer
Our garden project provides an opportunity to engage with the great outdoors. A volunteer in this area could be involved in supporting clients with a range of horticultural activities: working in our on-site nursery or local allotments, seeding in the polytunnels or getting involved in community projects.
Charity Shop Volunteer
Within our Charity Shop in Clarence Road, Grays we are looking for people to be involved in all aspects of the shops’ operation, including customer service, operating a till, sorting and pricing donations and creating effective displays.
Within our advocacy team, you could empower and enable someone in substantial difficulty to find their voice. A volunteer could be involved in helping others to read or write a letter as well as a range of other tasks to support someone to express their views and wishes.
Peer Mentor and Support Volunteer
If you have lived experience of managing your own mental health then you could offer mentoring, on a short term basis, to someone going through their own recovery. As a mentor you would be able to support someone to reach their goals and aspirations through small steps, with the understanding you already have from your own experiences.
There is the opportunity to facilitate a share a skill or interest group where the aim is for a group of people to support each other and make use of community services. If you have a particular skill yourself, but not the time to hold a regular group, then you could come in and hold a one-off workshop –‘share a skill’ – give people a taster; new interests.
We also have our wellbeing centre open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 11am – 2.30pm for group sessions so you may want to come and support during these.
Counselling Volunteer Placements
We have vacancies for volunteer counselling placements within our counselling service. Trainees must be in the second year or equivalent of a counselling diploma to volunteer in their area.
Thurrock Mind are working in partnership with Inclusion Therapy Service to offer free Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy cCBT, Silvercloud and Mindfulness Programmes. This volunteering doesn’t require any previous counselling qualifications and within this opportunity you would be able to support people who are accessing the service to give them feedback on their progress with the online programme.
Recovery College Volunteer
Educational courses around wellbeing for Thurrock residents. Volunteers in this area could get involved with production of courses, administration around college materials and setting up for a course.
Administration and Promotions Volunteer
There are administration opportunities within all of our projects: you may want to provide a professional and efficient front of house service for anyone who comes into Thurrock Mind, use IT skills to work on our various systems, provide a polite telephone manner on the various calls we have to take and make and keep our social media updated. There are a variety of administrative tasks to get involved with.
Promotions volunteers are able to attend fayres, shop stands and fundraising events to talk to people about the services we offer and fundraise or help recruit more volunteers.
