Couple/Relationship Counselling

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a place where you can discuss freely without judgement, any issues/problems you may be experiencing. It is a place where you can feel safe to explore emotions, thoughts and behaviours.  You may gain an understanding and awareness of those behaviours, thoughts and emotions.  This is a place for you to gain strength to make changes and recognise you have choices.

We offer a counselling service that can accommodate your busy lifestyle.  Appointments can be offered during the day, evening or Saturday morning.

The counselling at Thurrock Mind incorporates several different working modalities or interventions, i.e. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person Centred, Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis, Solution Focussed and Gestalt. Many of our counsellors work in an integrative way, incorporating more than one intervention to suit the needs of the client.

Our Commitment to you

We are committed to you throughout our work together, you will be respected and shown dignity always.  Our ethics underpin our work within this relationship, including the values we set ourselves in ensuring your well-being always.

Thurrock Mind is an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and our counselling service is BACP Accredited. Our counsellors are accredited and Registered Members or working towards accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) www.bacp.co.uk

We have a robust recruitment procedure for volunteer counsellors.  We have a range of Student and Qualified Counsellors; our Student Counsellors are at a stage in their training where they are deemed fit to volunteer on placement as a Counsellor in training working on a one to one basis with clients. Anger Management

Anger can cause distorted thinking which can be unhelpful and sometimes destructive. This 8-week group aims to help you develop new logical thinking patterns which allow you to express anger assertively and not aggressively. You will be able to identify your anger triggers, understand different types of anger, recognise how others play on your feelings, realise what guilt can do to you, and identify irrational beliefs.

Confidence and Assertiveness

This group will give you an understanding of how to improve your confidence, build your self-esteem, look at personal boundaries and identify what they are.  Understand different behaviour patterns and learn to communicate and deal with situations in a more assertive way. This course runs for 8 weeks giving you time to build on what you have learned, understanding yourself better during this time.

Depression and Anxiety

This group looks at anxiety, panic, breathing and relaxation exercises, avoidance and safety behaviours, depression, stress management, thought patterns, health behaviours and support systems.  Over an 8-week period, you will learn about the above and understand triggers, becoming more aware of oneself throughout the course.

Bereavement Support Group

This group is facilitated by a Grief Counsellor. This group is aimed at giving those who have been bereaved an understanding of the grief cycle, allowing some processing time within the group to explore feelings and emotions.  There are relaxation techniques incorporated into the sessions and this group runs for 6 weeks.

The group work is on offer to Thurrock Adults and will only run dependent on numbers.

‘The service that I received came just at the right time for me. I really now understand myself. Less isolated. More open minded.’

What we offer

Thurrock Mind Multi-Ethnic Counselling Service (MECS) is a Confidential Counselling service for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in Thurrock.

MECS is a safe space where members from the Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) communities, living and/or working in Thurrock can access talking therapy.  Life can sometimes be a struggle and if you are from the Black or Ethnic Minority community prejudice and discrimination can add to the pressure of every-day life. There are two ways we can help:

One to One Counselling

Counselling offers you a space to explore issues, emotions and feelings that have come about because of various life events. Counselling may take a few weeks or it could be longer. In the first instance, you would meet with a counsellor for an initial session to assess your needs. You can self-refer or ask a professional to refer you.

Drop-in Talkshops

This is an informal, safe and supportive space. You can come along on Wednesdays between 9:30 to 11:30 at Tilbury Children Centre, London Road RM18 8EY or book an appointment slot of 20 minutes. The services are run by black counsellors.
