Thurrock Mind Services

Thurrock Mind aims to promote positive mental health and relief from emotional distress through the provision of a variety of community based services. All services are developed with input from the people who use them, and seek to provide support to all sectors of society, regardless of age, religion, race or ethnicity.

The Advocacy Project

Sometimes it is difficult for people with mental health problems to express their concerns about their needs during a hospital stay or when living in the community. Advocates help and support people, and their carers, to speak out for themselves. Their role is to enable people to express their feelings, needs and opinions, as well as trying to ensure people understand their rights.

The Counselling Project

We can face many challenges or obstacles in life, and sometimes the pressure becomes too much, resulting in stress. Although stress in small doses can be a good thing - it can give an impetus, motivating one to stay focussed and alert - if stress becomes too difficult to cope with it can become a threat to physical and emotional well-being. Our Counselling and Groupwork services offer a safe, private, confidential and caring space to explore issues, emotions and feelings that have come about as a result of various life events.

  • Counselling can help you tackle your fears, overcome barriers and move forward in your life.
  • The Groupwork programme enables people to meet with other like-minded people to work through issues in a supportive and caring environment, supported by a group facilitator. A range of different groups are available.

Day Services

Thurrock Mind Day Services work holistically with people to promote and encourage social inclusion. We aim to get people back on the road to recovery by providing the most appropriate support at the right time. Activities focus on enabling the people who use our services to access mainstream opportunities, encouraging them to become part of the community rather than separate from it. There are three different types of service to support this:

  • Community Bridge Builders – work one to one with service users to help them identify and achieve goals that will lead to positive mental health (Find out more link to in depth info Community Bridge Builders)
  • Befriending Service – recruits and trains volunteers to provide friendship and social support to people who may be lonely and isolated in the community (Find out more link to in depth info Befriending)
  • Drop In Activities – provide a range of groups and other activities that support service users to gain in confidence. The Drop In Centre provides a comfortable environment to deliver activities as well as offering the opportunity for people to catch up with friends and gain peer support.

Stepping Stones Employment Project

Mental health problems may have a dramatic effect on employment. Research shows that work can be extremely important in maintaining positive mental health and promotes the recovery of those who have experienced mental health problems. Many people wish to gain, or return to, employment after a period of mental ill health, but they may not feel ready. Stepping Stones can help by providing the support that people may need to improve their chances of gaining, or returning to, work after mental ill health.

Childrens Counselling Services for Parents and Carers

Sometimes life can be difficult, and speaking to a counsellor can help people see things more clearly, or view them differently. Thurrock Mind Counsellors are available one day a week in each Children’s Centre area in Thurrock, with the aim of supporting parents, and carers of young children, with any issues that may be affecting their life - for example, a recent event may have brought up negative feelings from the past causing the person to feel confused, angry and upset.
